Applications are invited for a research position available in the Computing Department at Lancaster University, in the general area of mobile and ubiquitous computing. We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher to contribute to our research on devices and systems for interaction ‘beyond the desktop’, and to participate in collaborative research on mobile and wearable interface technologies as part of the Intermedia project, a European Network of Excellence on interaction with multimedia services.

Our research on interactive systems for mobile and ubiquitous computing is concerned with devices, systems and techniques for interaction beyond the traditional desktop setting. This includes mobile user interfaces, sensor-based and context-aware interfaces, and augmentation of everyday objects and environments for interaction. In the context of a new European network, we seek to extend our research to investigation of mobile and wearable devices and interfaces for interaction with ubiquitous computing environments and pervasive services. Topics of interest include novel mobile interaction techniques, wearable devices, mobile phones and camera phones as pervasive interaction devices, and use of context sensing and near-field communication for interaction in mobile environments.

We invite applications from individuals who have a good first degree, MSc or equivalent in computer science or a related area. Prior experience in the field of interactive systems and mobile or wearable computing is appreciated. The post requires very good programming and system prototyping skills. It will involve participation in a European research network, requiring travel to partner sites across Europe, good communication skills, and a genuine interest in collaborative research.

The Computing Department offers a highly collegiate and stimulating environment for research career development. The successful candidate will join a research team that is internationally recognized and has close links to other leading groups world-wide. The post is available from June 2007 or later, for 24 months in the first instance, with intention for further extension.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Dr. Enrico Rukzio (rukzio@comp.lancs.ac.uk) with a brief email note on their interest in this position, to initiate informal discussion. Contact details and further information are available at http://ubicomp.lancs.ac.uk.

Disability Interview Promise

We promise to interview all disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria for the post and consider them on their abilities.

Disability is defined by the Disability Discrimination Act as a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term (at least 12 months) effect on your ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.
